Handicrafts Plays a Vital Role in India’s Traditional History
Indian handicrafts history starts 5000 years back from now. We can see a lot examples of handicrafts that are taken from the Civilization of Indus Valley. The tradition of crafts in India has grown around needs of the common people, their religious values, and the needs of the ruling elites. In addition to this foreign as well as domestic trade have also played a significant role in the evolution of most of the different craft forms in India. The craft traditions in India have withstood several depredations of time and also several foreign invasions and some continue to flourish till date. It mainly happens due to the open mindedness of the Indian handicraftsmen to assimilate and accept new ideas.
The Medieval time period of the handicraftsmen flourished in the field of weaving, woodworking, painting, pottery, jewellery etc. In the history the Mughal time period was considered the golden period of Indian art, craft and culture. Since the Mughals brought a rich heritage with them. The Mughals introduced methods like inlay work, glass engraving, carpet weaving, brocades, enamelling etc. Thus made a greater evolution in handicrafts.
Handicrafts are more precisely expressed as the handmade or artisanal handicraft , which can be of a wide variety of types of work where decorative and useful objects are made completely using hand or else by using only simple tools. It is a traditional main sector of crafts, and it applies to a wide range of design and creative activities that are related to making things with one's skill and hands, including mouldable and rigid materials , work with textiles, plant fibres, paper etc. One of the world's oldest handicraft is called Dhokra. The term handicraft is applied usually to traditional techniques of creating different items (whether it is for personal use or as a product) that are both aesthetic and practical.

Handicraft is very important because it represents our tradition and culture. It promotes the heritage of a country with indigenous materials and it preserves traditional knowledge and talents. Handicraft is the expression of our history and I think we must encourage artisans to continue the craft production that will help them to show the beauty of this art.
Handicrafts are those with unique expressions, which represent a culture, tradition and heritage of a country. Among that wooden carvings are most common and have high demand. The making of sculptures in wood has been extremely widely practiced. It therefore becomes an important hidden element in the art history of many cultures. Wood carving which is a form of woodworking is done by means of a cutting tool (mainly knife) in one hand or a chisel by two hands or with one hand on a chisel and one hand on a mallet, resulting in a wooden figure or figurine, or in the sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object.
